The Kamehameha butterfly or Pulelehua is seen on all four of the major Hawaiian islands and is the state insect. It feeds on acacia Koa sap and lives in damp forest canopies where ‘i’iwi, ‘apapane and amakihi are also found. One of only two butterflies native to Hawaii, the Kamehameha butterfly’s population is declining likely due to invasive weeds and introduced insects. Every plant and bird painted within the wings of the pulelehua is endemic to Maui.
